I've had success with Handbrake for video conversions. Just another option out there, and open source at that.

WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe I work with this program. I think that is lightweight, easily understandable, there is a free version for transfer of AVI to Mp 4

I use a software with the same name...it's from DVDVideoSoft. Maybe this is the same program.
