Preferred Gif generator

Hi this might be a silly question, but I'm not a techno wizard... I've seen a lot of nice gifs on here... is there a good piece of software out there, that can capture and convert direct from the feed??

Failing that a good video capture program would be good (pref free and convertible for here

it is simple to use and had a plenty of format including flv and gif which can be set to capture directly from the feed
