Every time I watch this sport I wonder who is in more danger: fans or drivers. In some ways you have to be nuts to stand next to a roadway with no barriers as cars on the edge of the envelope hurtle past at those speeds. Surprised many fans are not killed every race.

I have had this happen to me twice; neither with a fatality. Another day years ago driving to work it was dark (about 7 am) and a deer jumped a stone wall about 4 feet from the road and the pickup truck in front of me nailed it broadside. The deer went skidding down the icy road about 40 feet into the driveway on the other side. Thought it was toast! I stopped and was going to get out and it stood up, shook itself a few times, walked across the road and hopped the wall back into the field. Hope it was ok.
